Stands - Love 'em or leave 'em?

Stitching the Night Away's Blog Hop #2 is up.  Here is this week's question:

Do you use a stand when you stitch? If so, tell us about it and share pictures if you’ve got them. If not, would you like to try using a stand? Do you have any tips or tricks around using a stand versus not using a stand?

I do not, although I wish I had a stand to hold the very large embroidery hoop I'musing for my current project.  My hand cramps after holding it for more than a few threads of stitching.  I've never really liked stands because I can't sit back when I'm using them and I get too uncomfortable sitting forward.  I definitely don't like lap stands - I'm too big and feel like I'm squished into them.  Anyone have any suggestions for a good one?

  1. Could you explain what you mean by "being squished into them? Are you talking about the lap stands that you sit on? Or, the ones that just sit on top of your legs?

Stands definitely do make the larger projects easier to work on.

  2. I feel the same way about the stands. I don't own one and doubt I ever will. I'm working with an 11 x 11 inch qsnap frame and my hands are also cramping after a short time. I'm thinking about using a smaller hoop. I don't have a scroll frame wide enough but could probably buy some wider bars!

  4. I had that squished in feeling with my old lap stand because it went under the outside of my leg and came up over my lap. The stand I just got from American Dream Products you have a sort of T shaped bar so you can put it on either side of your leg and sit just about any way you'd like and still be able to use it. I actually sat indian-style with my feet up off the floor last night and stitched while watching television. I really like that feature of it.

  5. I have never tried a stand. I cant see spending that much money for something I may or may not like. Maybe I'll borrow one some day.
